INGV Roma2 Section

Geomagnetism, Aeronomy and Environmental Geophysics

The Section The Geophysical activities carried out in INGV mainly concern seismology and vulcanology. A good part of the remaining geophysical activities are carried out in Roma2 Section, distinguishing itself for its multidisciplinary characteristic.

The Section Roma2 has an important project activities inclination, having also the role to give servicing and consulting to state institutions and international organizations cooperating with law enforcement agencies for environmental investigations and international treaty compliance (CTBT).

Roma2 section has a consistent monitoring role, managing geomagnetic and ionospheric observatories as well as multi-parametric measuring stations spread throughout the country, both on mainland and at sea. Monitoring activities performed by the Section range from electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic measurements (environmental measurements on geoelectric and geomagnetic, radar-glaciology and high-spectrum spectrum analyzes) to natural and manmade gravimetric and natural radioactivity measurements taken on the ground and on the various solid and fluid matrices. In addition, the Section devoted part of its staff to provide its contribution to the application of multi-parametric techniques during volcanic monitoring activities as indicated in Annex A of the Civil Protection Department Convention. These activities have formed a copious database useful for many research activities performed in the Section in collaboration with foreign research institutions, especially European, and in synergy with national universities. With these last ones, the Section contribute in training master and doctorate students.

The Section partecipates in European infrastructure projects,  the paleomagnetism lab is included in the National Research Infrastructure Roadmap and ESFRI European Roadmap, participating in EPOS (European Plate Observing System), The research unit UF7 is directly involved in EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observation)  which just started the implementation phase.

The scientific activities The scientific activities of Roma2 cover a wide spectrum of themes related to Geophysical Sciences. Its research focuses on the study of geomagnetism and rock magnetism in their various applications, on the systematic observations of space and ionospheric phenomena providing radio propagation and space weather services, on the environmental geophysics surveys and studies, on the multidisciplinary marine studies and, finally, on the electromagnetic measurements and monitoring. Such a broad range of thematic disciplines, ranging from atmospheric and marine observations to oceanographic and space studies, marks the heterogeneous and peculiar mission of the Section with respect to the tasks carried out by other INGV Sections primarily devoted to Solid Earth Sciences.

Locations The personnel and the infrastructure resources of the Section are distributed over various locations in the national territory, Catania, Gibilmanna (PA), Palermo, Rome, L’Aquila and Portovenere (SP)
